Post-Study Work Rights in New Zealand

What is a Post Study Work Visa?

A Post Study Work Visa lets international students stay and work in New Zealand after they finish their studies. You can work full time and build local experience.

Most students get this visa after completing a degree in New Zealand, and in many cases it can be valid for up to 3 year

Degree Graduates

BSc and MSc

A degree qualification of level 7, that you studied for full-time, for at least 30 weeks in New Zealand, or

a qualification at level 8 to 10 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework that has been studied full-time for at least 30 weeks in New Zealand

Have completed a degree at Level 7 or higher on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF)

Studying full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can apply for a Post Study Work Visa after graduation.

  • Studied for at least 30 weeks
  • Degree level can be:

-Level 7 (Bachelor’s)

-Level 9(Master’s)

How Long You Can Stay and Work

  • For most graduates with a Level 7 or higher degree (including Bachelors and Masters):
  • You can stay and work in New Zealand for up to 3 years after finishing your qualification.
  • The exact duration depends on your specific qualification and how long youstudied in NZ.

This means a typical Bachelor’s or Master’s graduate will qualify for a Post Study Work Visa valid up to 3 years.

Work Rights on the Visa

Once the Post Study Work Visa is granted:

  • If you have a degree Level 7 or higher (like Bachelors or Masters), you can work in almost any job for any employer in New Zealand.
  • There are no employer or job restrictions for degree graduates.
  • This open work right is one of the key benefits of the visa for international graduates.

New Zealand Student-to-Residence Pathway (INZ 2026 Update)

Study → Work → Skilled Employment → Residence

  • 25 hours/week work during study
  • 3-Year Post-Study Work Visa
  • Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Pathway
  • Residence opportunities from August 2026

These SMC pathways will open in August 2026.

They are not available under the current Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa policy.

Bachelor’s (NZQF Level 7) Pathway

Step 1 — Study

  • 25 hours/week work during term

  • Full-time during holidays

Step 2 — Post Study Work Visa

  • Up to 3 years

Step 3 — Skilled Employment

  • ANZSCO Skill Level 1–3 job

Step 4 — Earn 6 SMC Points

Example Structure (Based on your provided scenario):

  • Bachelor’s = 3–5 points (depending on policy update)

  • NZ Skilled Work (1–2 years) = 1–2 points

  • Skilled Employment Bonus = 1 point

Final:

Total = 6 Points (Eligible to Apply – From Aug 2026)

Master’s (NZQF Level 9) Pathway

Step 1 — Study

  • 25 hours/week during term

  • Full-time holidays

Step 2 — Post Study Work Visa

  • Up to 3 years

Step 3 — Skilled Job

  • ANZSCO Level 1

Step 4 — Earn 6 SMC Points

  • Master’s Qualification = 6 SMC Points
